Mr WILLEM SCHENK - FRCS

CONSULTANT ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON

Knee Surgeon

I was born in the Netherlands and graduated in medicine from the Erasmus University, Rotterdam in 1986. Working as a junior doctor in Utrecht, Amsterdam and Hilversum for four years before commencing Orthopaedic training in Antwerp, Belgium. I was fortunate to be trained by Professor Verstreken and Professor Martens in Antwerp, with an emphasis on knee surgery. Part of my training was spent in Melbourne, Australia where I gained invaluable experience in orthopaedic trauma.

My experience as a doctor spans over 30 years and I have been an orthopaedic surgeon since 1996. I worked as a Consultant in Orthopaedics and Trauma at the University Hospital Groningen, situated in the north of Holland, before coming to Bury St Edmunds in 2001.

In 2009 I set up a link with orthopaedic surgeons in Sri Lanka and we have had Sri Lankan orthopaedic trainees in Bury St Edmunds. I have been involved in training, teaching, examining and operating in Sri Lanka. I am a clinical lead for the International Surgical Training Programme of the Royal College of Surgeons and in 2019, was given an Honorary Fellowship of the Sri Lankan Orthopaedic Association.

I specialise in sports injuries and degenerative problems of the knee with a particular interest in cruciate ligament surgery, arthroscopic surgery, total knee replacement, uni-compartmental knee replacement (replacement of half of the knee) and knee revision surgery.

I have a keen interest in trauma surgery and post-traumatic reconstructions.
